Selective driver restore using PowerSpec Emergency Recovery CDs

Description:
Emergency Recover CDs are included with all PowerSpec systems that shipped with Windows 98SE (Second Edition), Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows ME (Millennium Edition). PowerSpec systems that shipped with Windows 95 or earlier versions of Windows 98 included a Windows install CD and all necessary drivers. Updated drivers are posted to the PowerSpec web site. If a PowerSpecDrivers folder does not exist on the original system image, then no special hardware drivers were required, other than what is already included with that version of Windows.

Restore drivers from Emergency Recovery CDs without a driver menu choice
Early Recovery CDs present three choices in a graphical window: Recover the hard disk files without formatting, Format then Recover the hard disk, and Exit to MS-DOS.

Both recover selections replace the Windows system files and original applications with copies as they shipped with the system. In most cases, this means that any new applications you may have installed will have to be re-installed before you can use them.

If a specific folder, such as the one that contains the hardware drivers for your system became damaged or was deleted, you can replace just this directory without replacing existing configurations or installed programs. To do this, Restart the system with the recover CD. Once you are at the Recover window, press ALT-F10. (Hold the 'Alt' key and press the 'F10' function key.)

This should cause a new window to appear that will allow you to specify what files or directories to restore to the system. Replaced files copy over the top of any existing files of the same name in the destination, just like the 'Recover without formatting' selection will replace all of the original files.

Selective File Recovery allows you to specify the directory or file to be copied. This must be done using the 8.3 filename format, and not the long filenames that are apparent under Windows. You may also have to rename these files or directories after exiting the Recover program.

For example, to restore just the hardware drivers directory that shipped with your PowerSpec system, you would enter: C:powers~1*.* in the text box. (You could also be more specific and enter C:powers~1drivers*.* as the directory to restore.) You also have button choices to replace any subdirectories under this location, and to overwrite the files if they already exist. In most cases you would want to select both options. Once this information has been entered, click on the OK button to start the selective recover.

Later versions of the Recover CD have a new selection added to the graphical menu. By clicking on the icon for 'Recover PowerSpec Drivers Only' the same files and directory structure as described above will be restored. The ALT-F10 choice should still be available, but is no longer needed for rebuilding the drivers.
